Back to School: Cascade Tee

Jillyane, from Hazlenut Handmade, is with us today sharing her back to school make, the Cascade Tee.

Back to school time is busy and exciting all at the same time.  It’s a natural time to get the kids new clothes to replace what they have outgrown and worn out.  New Horizon Designs has tons of patterns perfect for back to school sewing.  One of my favorites is the Cascade Tee, which just came out this summer.

The Cascade Tee has an adorable flounce which makes even a solid fabric look adorable.  But the pattern also includes a basic tee in multiple sleeve lengths too (including long sleeve!).  It’s slim fitting and feminine in every option.  The perfect basic with a splash of special!

My youngest daughter doesn’t really *need* any more new clothes since she’s got plenty of clothes passed down from my oldest daughter.  But I decided to make her a First Day of School shirt anyways.  She’s starting pre-K and it’s nice to occasionally have something new just for you on days that feel special.  My oldest daughter already has a couple Cascade Tees with the flounce and my youngest daughter has been slightly jealous of them.  So of course, the flounce was an absolute must for this version.

My fabric is a very lightweight jersey with only two way stretch.  It is airy, flows beautifully, and lets the flounce fall very sweetly.  I chose to serge the edge of my fabric with a slight gather before hemming the flounce.  The gathering helps me hem the curve smoothly without lots of fussing and the serging gives the fabric enough weight and stability to feed through the machine nicely.

Watching this little girl walk into pre-K makes my heart swell with equal parts longing and excitement.  Longing for the time with my baby and toddler already past and gone, and excitement for who she is now and the time we get together now.  She’s growing up beautifully!  Capable, confident, and willing to take a bit of risk to meet her goals.
